Backcountry Seminar at Alta Lodge

The state of Utah in the U.S.A. is known for its diverse natural beauty with rugged deserts, well-watered river valleys and snowcapped mountains. The Alta Ski Area is situated in these snow-covered mountains. The world-class Alta Lodge is conveniently located at the base of the Alta Ski Area, a mere 32 miles from the Salt Lake International Airport. The Backcountry Skiing Seminar is to be held at Alta Lodge from the 5th to the 9th of December 2007 and again from the 2nd to the 6th of April 2008, and seminar participants have a lot to look forward to.

Julia Mancuso – A Bright Star

Julia Mancuso is an American alpine skier and Olympic Gold Medalist, having been the winner of the giant slalom at the 2006 Winter Olympics. Born on 9 March 1984 in Reno, Nevada, Julia is the second of three daughters and, with being raised in Tahoe, she considers herself to be a true California girl. Her parents have a great love for sports, nature and outdoor life, which has rubbed off on their three daughters. Up until Julia was six years old, the family split their time between Squaw Valley Ski Resort and Kauai, Hawaii, with the result being that Julia learned to love the vastly different climates equally.

Avalanche Beacons

Avalanches are one of the biggest threats to everyone that takes on the snow-capped peaks, be it while snow skiing, snowboarding or hiking. No one wants to entertain the thought of being buried under meters of snow, so to be prepared for an avalanche, is the best defense. Carrying an avalanche beacon while on the slopes is vital for survival and for rescue. Technological advances have improved avalanche beacons and made them easier to use. It is a piece of equipment that could prove life-saving after an avalanche has dealt its potentially deadly blow.

FIS World Cup Championships 2007

The FIS World Cup Championships are separated into different divisions, allowing each competitor to compete in their own class and style. The championship divisions include alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, snowboarding, masters, ski jumping and freestyle skiing. Each year the competition gets better and every year brings the old faces back and lures the young talent to pit their skills against the world’s best. It is a championship where dreams are fulfilled and heroes are made. And so far this year, there have been nail biting moments and a few well-deserved FIS World Cup celebrations.
