Kincaid Park is located amongst breathtaking hills in Anchorage, Alaska. It is a park that is known for its magnificent hiking trails, festivals and most importantly, twenty miles of spectacular cross country skiing. It is therefore no surprise that it won the bid to host the U.S. Cross Country Championships for 2009 and 2010. The announcement was welcomed with great excitement from the locals in Anchorage and especially the skiing community based here.

When ConocoPhilips decided to sponsor the U.S. Cross Country Championships and place a bid to host the event in Anchorage, the Nordic Skiing Association Anchorage immediately supported their initiative. Kincaid Park lies just within the city limits and will not only give the local skiing community the opportunity to compete, but the economy of Anchorage will be boosted by the influx of skiers and supporters.

The Nordic Skiing Association Anchorage will be hosting the event, and skiers will find the conditions to be exciting and closely resemble what can be expected from Callahan Valley in Vancouver, where the 2010 Olympic Winter Games will be held. Competing here will therefore be great practice and preparation for those athletes who will be competing in the Winter Games. In the past, the Nordic Skiing Association Anchorage has always delivered quality skiing competitions, especially cross country events. With competent hosts and a brilliant competition venue, the U. S. Cross Country Championships is guaranteed to be a thrilling and successful event. And in addition to organization and venue, competitors can look forward to receiving wonderful support from the Anchorage locals, who are generally big fans of cross country skiing.

The upcoming U.S. Cross Country Championships will be held from the 3rd to the 8th of January 2009 and is a key event for skiers to show off their skills to be selected for the U.S. Olympic Cross Country Team. The Sprint (Classic) will take place on the 3rd of January, with the 10/15 kilometer Freestyle event taking place on the 5th, the 7th will be the 5/10 kilometer Classic and on the last day, competitors will take part in the Team Sprint (Freestyle).

Anchorage is seen by the entire cross country skiing community as the perfect venue for the 2009 and the 2010 U.S. Cross Country Championships, and spectators will be out in their hundreds, braving the cold, to watch some of the top skiing athletes battle it out for top position.

Seek out lighted areas on dark mid-winter days. But by spring, Alaskan skiers enjoy more daylight than most places in the world.

Alyeska

Alaska’s largest downhill resort. Alyeska’s tram travels 2,500′ of vertical in a mere three minutes. It accesses 1000 acres of wide-open bowls and breathtaking views.

Eagle Crest

A small local’s area in Juneau, Alaska’s capitol. Eagle Crest is full of character and excellent out-of-bounds opportunities. Enjoy world-class views of glaciers, the Juneau Icefield, and SE Alaska-s waterways.

Anchorage crosscountry

Alaska’s largest city is laced with trails. 1,500 acre Kincaid Park is a popular, in-city lighted trail system. Bicentennial Park features 5,000 acres of backcountry trails. Visit Anchorage in March to watch (or join) the Tour of Anchorage, a 50km ski marathon through town.

Fairbanks crosscountry

This chilly Alaskan city has great early-season snow, and long sunny spring days. Beware of frostbite in the cold of mid-winter. Try the University of Alaska’s trail system, or the lighted runs at Birch Hill.
