Tasmania lies to the south of mainland Australia, and is an island that is known for its impressive mountain ranges, of which eight stand higher than 1 500 meters above sea level. The peak that overshadows the other mountains is Mount Ossa, which stands proudly at 1 614 meters. Together with Victoria and New South Wales, Tasmania is amongst the most popular skiing destinations in Australia. The breathtaking Tasmanian Wilderness provides the ideal location for cross country skiing, while other resorts offer numerous winter sport activities.

June to October are the most favorable months for skiing in Tasmania. Mount Mawson and Ben Lomond are the two main resorts on the island. Ben Lomond is located just outside of Launceston. Situated in the Ben Lomond National Park, skiers will not only enjoy exciting skiing conditions but the scenery will be memorable too. The village is nestled in the mountains at an elevation of 1 460 meters, with its mountain peak being at 1 570 meters. The resort is popular for Alpine skiing, and in 1929 the Northern Tasmanian Alpine Club was established here. Starting off as a small chalet, it soon developed into a successful resort that included visitor facilities, accommodation and ski lifts. A team to oversee the Skifield Development Area was founded in 1995, and the Department of Parks and Wildlife announced in 2010 that a project was underway to introduce snowmaking machines to the ski area and to develop a snowboard park.

Other downhill ski operations also exist in Tasmania, such as those at Mount Mawson, which is situated in the Mount Field National Park. There are two rope tows available for intermediate skiers and one rope tow for more experienced skiers, as it features steep terrain and limited accommodation is available at this resort facility.

When snowfall allows it, cross country skiing and Alpine skiing is available at Cradle Mountain, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Wilderness Area. In total, there are twenty-eight mountains in Tasmania and most of them are over 1 220 meters. So, for cross country skiing and backcountry locations, skiers are recommended to visit Ben Lomond National Park, Mount Field National Park and Cradle Mountain – Lake St Clair National Park, with Mount Mawson and Ben Lomond offering picturesque downhill ski resorts.

Operating as a non-profit organization, the Swatch TTR World Snowboard Tour has as one of its goals the establishment of snowboarding as a major snow sport on a global scale, while at the same time providing high quality competitive experiences for snowboarders around the world. The TTR (Ticket To Ride) World Ranking List along with the TTR World Tour, sees organizers of a host of independent freestyle snowboard events collaborating to present a global tour, catering for snowboarders of all levels of expertise – from rookie to professional. As the TTR World Snowboard Tour kicks off for its 10th season, riders and their supporters have loads of excitement ahead of them.

With increasing interest and ongoing development in snowboarding as a sport, the TTR World Ranking system has been revised for the upcoming season. The four new ranking lists are: TTR Halfpipe World Tour Ranking; TTR Slopestyle World Tour Ranking; TTR Big Air World Tour Ranking; and TTR Overall World Tour Ranking. Riders can start notching up TTR Big Air World Tour Rankings at the 5 Star Billabong Ante Up at Whistler on July 1, 2011. The all-male competition is expected to be intense as big air competitors, including Sebastien Toutant, Mark McMorris, and Seppe Smits, take to the snow.

The Burton New Zealand Open, taking place from August 9 to 13, is considered to be the cornerstone event of the competition’s Southern Hemisphere Season. It has been re-graded as a 5 Star event, and offers both men and women the opportunity to gain ranking points for the TTR Halfpipe World Tour Ranking and the TTR Slopestyle World Tour Ranking. Other events taking place in New Zealand are the 4 Star Billabong Bro Down (August 5-6) and the 3 Star New Zealand Winter Games (August 19-24). Australia will be hosting the 3 Star Dew Hut Jam at Mount Buller (July 30-31) and the 4 Star Stylewars at Falls Creek (August 21-24).

The function of the TTR in the freestyle snowboarding world is to operate in the interests of the riders and the sport that brings them together. The TTR encourages creativity and innovation as the sport evolves. It has an open-door policy, with the primary goal of creating a network of events and contacts to benefit athletes and the snowboarding industry. It also seeks to expand awareness of a sport that offers fun, creativity and friendship, as well as competitive events to encourage progress in developing snowboarding skills. If you have the opportunity, you may want to check out snowboarding at its best at one of the TTR World Snowboard Tour events.

With snow skiing season drawing to a close in the northern hemisphere, skiers in the southern hemisphere are no doubt looking forward to indulging in their favorite sport. With a number of ski resorts catering exclusively for cross-country skiing, Australia offers adventurers a range of challenging terrain and spectacular scenery to choose from.

As part of the Yarra Ranges National Park, Mount Donna Buang is located around 80 kilometers from Melbourne and is the closest snowfield to this vibrant Australian city, making it a popular snow sport destination. The rough terrain is enjoyed by trekkers throughout the year, but in the winter time it becomes a playground for tobogganing and cross-country skiing.

Also located in the Yarra Ranges National Park in the Victoria State of Australia is the cross-country ski resort of Lake Mountain, so named after the surveyor-general of the area, George Lake. An exclusively cross-country skiing resort, Lake Mountain boasts up to 37 kilometers of ski and toboggan trails through the park, as well as a visitor center which was opened in 2004. During the other seasons of the year, Lake Mountain is popular with trekkers and mountain bikers. Unfortunately, the area suffered extensive damage as a result of rampant bush-fires in 2009, and although much has been done to restore the area visitors will still see evidence of fire damage.

Located around 230 kilometers from Melbourne, Mount Stirling is a back-country and cross-country resort within close proximity to the more commercial Mount Buller ski resort. Reaching the summit of the mountain takes some effort, but that is all part of the adventure of cross-country skiing. Skiers who choose to go this route will be rewarded with breathtaking views of Mount Buller and higher regions of the Great Dividing Range of Australia, including Mount Cobbler, Mount Howitt and Mount Speculation. Entrance to the patrolled ski area is monitored during the winter months and Mount Stirling has a number of huts to provide emergency shelter to skiers.

So, if you enjoy the excitement and challenge of cross-country skiing, Australia has more than enough options to keep you busy all season.

Skiing and snowboarding vacations are extremely popular for families who enjoy the outdoors and a little adventure. With so many breathtaking resorts around the world to choose from, vacations can be planned with the greatest of ease and the guarantee that both the adults and children will be entertained. Even though professional instructors are located at every ski resort to teach guests how to navigate the slopes, accidents are unavoidable. A new study, which will include the participation of students at the New South Wales High Country School in Australia, hopes to improve the safety of children on the snow.

All the students who participate in the snow study will be equipped with specialized gear. Each item of equipment will be fitted with GPS and monitoring equipment to enable scientist to study every move the student makes, and even each fall. Even the helmets being worn will give researchers insight into the head injuries that children can sustain while skiing or snowboarding. The study is being done by the University of Canberra in Australia, and it is hoped that the research will assist in developing more advanced safety measures and equipment for children. The speed at which the children travel will also be monitored as well as their movements on the snow. For the participating children, it will be a day of fun and excitement as they try their hand at skiing, or show-off their perfected moves. They will be encouraged to participate in activities they would usually enjoy, as researchers want to study the children in their normal state of play and enjoyment. While looking at the children’s behaviour on the slopes, scientist will get a clearer picture of the impact that skiing has on children.

Dr. Tracy Dickson, one of the researchers participating in the study, explained: “We’re just trying to understand the characteristics that help develop snow sport safety strategies to help make better choices about how they’re skiing and boarding, so they can help protect themselves from injury.” If new technology and safety precautions can be developed from this snow study, it will assist in allowing children to enjoy the soft white slopes of ski resorts with the reduced risk of injury.

Thredbo in Australia’s Snowy Mountains is one of Australia’s most popular ski resorts. It is located just a few miles away from Mount Kosciusko, Australia’s highest mountain and offers skiing for all levels. Extensive snow-making guarantees snow cover, so be prepared to ski on exhilarating trails, from the top all the way to the bottom of the numerous runs.

Even if you have never skied before, Thredbo’s purpose built beginner’s area, Friday Flat will help you find your ski legs. A large bowl, it has a good pitch to get you going but is gentle enough to cushion you during the first tumbles. A slow speed quad chair and Snow Runner conveyer gets you to the top and Thredbo’s First Timers Lift and Learners Deal is just the ticket to get you going.

Its large vertical drop and plenty of long trails spread over varied terrain makes it one of the best resorts for skiing in Australia. More experienced skiers will enjoy the Cruiser area where intermediate trails are dominated by wide, tree-lined cruisers, long wide tree-lined trails, and are perfect for cruising. The trails are immaculately maintained and one can access the area with the high-speed Cruiser Chairlift. Some more practice here will prepare you for the long and varied terrain on the Supertrail and High Noon which provide plenty of thrills. You can then head on over to Central spur and check out Antons and Sponars.

The resort is serviced by twelve chairlifts and the trails are spread over nearly 1200 acres. Most of the trails are suitable for intermediates but Thredbo’s off-piste areas are among the best in the southern hemisphere. Thredbo’s super-trails with the greatest vertical drop in Australia are very popular with more experienced skiers, the longest run being nearly twenty thousand feet long. A terrain park offers half pipe and limited cross country opportunities.

Thredbo offers a great choice in accommodation and some of the best après-ski in the Snowy Mountains The mind boggling range of cuisine at the restaurants and the live entertainment at its numerous bars, pubs and nightclubs provides a lot to do off the slopes. Thredbo Leisure Centre has a heated indoor swimming pool and waterslide, fully equipped gym, squash court for non-skiers.

They are not skis, they are not boards, they are figgles and you can try them out at Mount Buller! There is no end to the fun one can have at Mount Buller at any time of the year. One of the best equipped ski resorts in Australia, Mount Buller Alpine Resort is 250km north east of Melbourne and boasts of some of Victoria’s most spectacular alpine and sub-alpine terrain. It offers 180 hectares of extensive ski trails, the longest being 2.5km, and plenty of open skiing space above the tree line.

You will never have to stand in a line here thanks to the twenty-five high capacity ski lifts here and there are plenty of slopes for skiers of all levels. Beginners will love the designated area overlooking the Mt Buller Village, BB2. Another favorite green run is Burnt Hut Spur with its long, wide trails, perfect for beginners. Intermediate skiers and boarders have Shakey Knees, a fun, wide run close to the Village, now equipped with snowmaking. The other choice is the ever popular Little Buller Spur, offering skiers a reliable and consistent skiing experience.

Advanced skiers can have their fill on the south side of the ski area that includes the popular Federation, Wood Run, the Bull Run and Wombat bowls. Other popular choices are Howqua Extension, McLaughlin’s Shoulder and Cow Camp. Mount Buller fulfills the Australian skiers’ love for variety and excitement. In addition to traditional skiing you can try telemarking/freeheeling or of course the figgles. These short skis combine the thrill of boarding with skiing and are less tiring than either of them. The little planks give you the freedom and will spice up your time on the slopes. You could try snowtubing at the Spurs tubing park for free with the purchase of a sightseeing ticket. Tobogganing at two toboggan parks in the resort is also very popular.

Mount Buller is home to the National Alpine Museum, the only Alpine Museum in Australia. You can polish your skills and physical prowess at La Trobe University Mt Buller Campus which offers a wide range of facilities and activities. Breathtaker All Suite Hotel hosts Australia’s first Alpine Spa where you can rejuvenate and relax.

A skiing vacation in Australia is unusual, which is what makes it more appealing. Further, you can ski between July and September in the Australian Alps on a summer vacation. When you are through with cuddling koalas, watching penguins on Philip Island and meeting kangaroos everywhere, forget about football and cricket; just head for the Australian Alps.

Charlotte Pass is Australia’s first ski resort and the highest. It is accessible even when it is snowbound in winter by snow transport from Perisher Valley. It is an excellent base for cross country skiing as it offers access to the main range. Accommodation is limited but all genuinely in the snow and it is never crowded. There are few lifts but no lines and there is a lot of skiing area in this secluded vacation resort. Southern Tasmania offers downhill skiing at Mount Mawson in the Mount Field National Park, less than two hours drive from Hobart.

Situated next to a large lake, high in the Australian Alps in Northeast Victoria in an alpine bowl above the snowline, Falls Creek has plenty of appeal. Lifts allow you to access both sides of the mountain and you have more than 450 hectares of terrain and 92 runs to choose from. Falls Creek offers a fantastic range of intermediate skiing with tree-lined runs, south facing bowls and four great terrain parks. Home of Australia’s first superpipe, an excellent dedicated terrain park is built each year and often has the largest half pipe in Australia. There is a wide choice of ski in ski out lodging throughout the resort.

Mount Hotham, located 350 km from Melbourne is known as a “serious skiers” mountain and has greatest variety of advanced and expert runs in Australia. There is a good range of beginners and intermediate skiing and boarding and night skiing is offered on the Big D area. Improvements and additions are the norm here with a new bridge to carry skiers across the access road, three new quad chairs, increased snowmaking and plenty of village developments. You can take a helicopter flight across to Falls Creek for a day’s skiing or boarding there!
