Snowmass Village is located in the Pitkin County of Colorado, and was transformed into a ski by Bill Janss and DRC Brown in the year 1966. Over the years the resort developed into one of the most popular skiing and snowboarding destinations for local and international snow sport enthusiasts. It cemented its name into history with the accidental discovery of a Pleistoncene ecosystem that dates back to the ice age, in 2010. This year another historic event will take place at Snowmass Village, the 50th anniversary of the Professional Ski Instructors of America and American Association of Snowboard Instructors.

Even though the techniques and equipment might have changed over the years, the passion and devotion to the sport has not. The celebration to honor the pioneers of the sport, the changes that snow sport has undergone and the future that lies ahead, began on the 4th and ends on the 9th of April 2011. And it is more than just seven days of talks and seminars. The Professional Ski Instructors of America and American Association of Snowboard Instructors have always prided themselves on training instructors in a variety of disciplines, at a very high standard, ensuring that instructors have the ability to train new winter sport lovers correctly and safely. An estimated five hundred and fifty guests will be attending, with a banquet for the guests to enjoy.

The three thousand acres of terrain at Snowmass will most certainly not be wasted, with skiing and snowboarding fun being worked into the schedule. Sara Nakon, Membership Director of the Professional Ski Instructors of America and American Association of Snowboard Instructors, commented: “This is the first time we’ve done an event of this magnitude. Snowmass is perfect for the 50/50 event with 3,000 acres of terrain, three other ski areas close by, and the availability of convenient banquet facilities and so many off-mountain venues for evening events and entertainment.”

National Sales Manager of Snowmass Tourism Groups and Meeting, Jim O’Leary, expressed his excitement in regard to the conference, saying, “Snowmass is honored to have been chosen by snowsports industry leaders as the venue for this conference and our team has been working behind the scenes for a year since we learned we would be hosting it to ensure that it executes flawlessly.”

It has been documented that pioneers in Colorado discovered the use of skis when gold was discovered in 1859. One of the members of the Colorado Ski & Snowboard Hall of Fame, Father Dyer, used skis to travel to remote areas and preach to communities that were not previously reachable. This year, members of the ski community who have achieved and made valuable contributions to the Colorado ski industry will be inducted into the Colorado Ski & Snowboard Hall of Fame.

The 34th Ski Gala, to be hosted at the Westin Westminster in Colorado, will be the main event where the inductees will receive their honors. It will be held on the 6th of November 2010, and is also the official opening of the new ski season. The inductees for this year will be as follows:

Jake Burton Carpenter is the founder of Burton Snowboards and will be inducted as a Sport Builder. After a broken collar bone prevented him from competing in an event, he decided to open his own snowboard building shop in the 1970s. A snowboarding competition was hosted in 1981, and since then the sport of snowboarding and Carpenter’s involvement in the ski industry increased. An inductee that will not be present at the ceremony will be Ernst Constam. Born in 1888, Constam is being honored for his pioneering engineering, as he invented the overhead cable ski tow, with his first ski tow being installed in 1933. Horst Abraham is being inducted as an Inspirational Individual and a Sport Builder, as he developed from a ski instructor and trainer into creating ski methodology and also assisted in creating breakthroughs in ski instruction and athlete support.

Other inductees into the 2010 Colorado Ski & Snowboarding Hall of Fame include Harry Frampton (Sport Builder), Tygve Myhren (Sport Builder), Sandy Treat (Sport Builder and Inspirational Individual), Johnny Spillane (Competitor of the Year), Antje Maempel (Collegiate Skier of the Year) and Matt Gelso (Collegiate Skier of the Year).

Each year, the National Ski Areas Association compiles a report to assess the snowboarding and skiing activity of each season.

Each year, the National Ski Areas Association compiles a report to assess the snowboarding and skiing activity of each season. The preliminary analysis of the report revealed a pleasant surprise for the association, showing that even though a recession was ongoing, the United States experienced the second most successful season to date. These statistics were derived from the Kottke National End of Season Survey, and brings hope that the coming seasons will be just as successful as the one that has just passed.

A record ski and snowboard season was experienced in the winter of 2007 – 2008, when 60.5 million skiers and snowboarders were documented. Compared to last season, the number of visitors to the snowcapped mountain rages has increased by 4.2 percent, with the total number of visits for the 2009 – 2010 winter being 59.7 million. As expected, due to previous seasons, the Rocky Mountain has again raked in the most visits, welcoming more than twenty million visitors and increasing their visitation by 3.4 percent. While some areas are still compiling their final figures for submission, in general the report indicates that most areas have enjoyed an increase in visitors from last season, and that the entire winter season was a huge success. Another area that did extremely well is the Pacific Northwest, increasing their visitation statistic from last year by 3.2 percent.

The report by NSAA has also revealed that even though visitation numbers increased across the board, the snowfall average nationwide had decreased this season by fourteen percent. While some resorts endured a slow snowfall, others, such as the Aspen-Snowmass and most of the Colorado region, enjoyed a spectacular snowfall, being able to extend their skiing and snowboarding seasons. The additional weeks, some being extended to June, at these resorts will also have a positive impact on the National Ski Areas Association report, which will be released in totality in July. Once the final report has been drafted and released, it is believed that the outcome for the past season will be positive and encouraging and that the next season will be just as well supported, if not more.

Approximately seventy thousand skiing fans gathered at the various host resorts to be a part of the 2008 Winter Dew Tour. Organizers believe that this year’s event will be just as successful due to the excitement and anticipation building up around the coming event from both spectators and participants. The three venues for the Winter Dew Tour and its schedule have been released and includes a new host resort in the line-up. The Winter Dew Tour 2009, will be kicking off in Colorado in December.

The first leg of the Winter Dew Tour will be hosted by the Breckenridge Ski Resort from the 18th to the 20th of December 2009. The Snowbasin Resort in Utah is the new addition to the schedule, and they will be hosting the second part of the tour that takes place from the 15th to the 17th of January 2010. From the 5th to the 7th of February, the action will be in Vermont at the Mount Snow Resort, where the tour will come to an end.

The world’s top winter athletes attend the Winter Dew Tour, competing in various divisions, such as the snowboarding divisions, which are superpipe and slopestyle, and the slopestyle and superpipe freeskiing divisions. Some of last year’s winners will be back again to either defend their title or improve on their previous efforts, but no matter what their motivation, the tour will be filled with exciting showdowns between the large group of talented athletes. Last year’s winners included Spencer O’Brien, Kelly Clark, Tanner Hall, PK Hunder and Shaun White. Another wonderful feature of the Winter Dew Tour, is that skiing enthusiasts who cannot make it to the host resorts will not be missing out on the action. NBC, Fox Sports Australia, Extreme Channel, USA Network, Eurosport 2 and MTV2 will be televising broadcasts of the events, which proved to be another success last year, as an estimated six million viewers watched the event from the comfort of their homes. Attending the Winter Dew Tour is a must for avid winter sport enthusiasts as it is an exciting event and gives them the opportunity to see their favorite athletes in serious live competition action.
