If you’re an adrenaline junkie looking for a new rush, extreme skiing might be just up your ally. The amazing speed combined with the rush of adrenaline keeps many great skiers coming back for more each winter. And of course there is the prestige that goes with being an extremist – not many people are willing to put their necks on the line in pursuit of the ultimate combination of danger, speed and thrill – so extreme skiers are generally both admired and seen as being somewhat insane.

If you think that this sounds like the sort of thing you were born to do, then keep reading. Extreme skiing is typically performed on a steep slope with a slant of over 60 degrees which may be combined with dangerous terrain. Often participants in this sport are taken to the starting point by helicopter from which they drop to the rough snow below and start their skiing trip instantly. As they cut their way down the mountain side, extreme skiers have to be alert to the various possible dangers which surround them such as sudden dips in the ground, obstacles under the snow, sudden drops and cliff edges and of course, the legendary avalanche! The sport is usually enjoyed off-piste – that is, on compacted snow, which means that it is far harder to control yourself and keep your sense of direction.

Extreme skiing nowadays is classified under Big Mountain skiing or Freeskiing. The term ‘extreme skiing’ was originally coined in the 80′s and a lot has changed since then. However the thrill and excitement of the sport is, in essence, the same and it keeps adrenaline junkies with a passion for the sport coming back again and again – even after bones have been broken and bruises have healed.

The AST Dew Tour is a very popular five month summer extreme sport series featuring three sports, each incorporating a number of different disciplines, taking place at venues across the USA. The AST Dew Tour sports include BMX (Dirt, Park and Vert), Skateboard (Park and Vert) and Freestyle Motocross. The recent news that the AST Dew Tour will be extended to include three months of winter competition has been greeted with great enthusiasm from snow skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts.

AST, together with major sponsor Mountain Dew, and covered by NBC Sports, is planning to launch the three-event AST Winter Dew Tour on 18 December at Breckenridge Ski Resort in Colorado. The Winter Tour will feature a program packed with freesking and snowboarding events for both men and women. Snowboarding and snow skiing events for men will include superpipe and slopestyle, and women can look forward to competing in their own, similar events.

Following the 18-21 December event at Breckenridge, the second event in the AST Winter Dew Tour will take place on 8-11 January 2009 at the Mount Snow Resort in West Dover, Vermont, with the third and final event being hosted by Northstar-at-Tahoe Resort in Lake Tahoe, California, on 19-22 February 2009. In a similar fashion to the Summer Dew Tour, the AST Winter Dew Tour will be run on a cumulative points system. An AST Winter Dew Cup champion will be crowned in each competition discipline at the final winter stop.

AST President, Wade Martin, has expressed his confidence that the three chosen resorts will contribute significantly to the success of the AST Winter Dew Tour, saying: “We feel that each resort is a great fit for the AST and we look forward to the start of another successful action sports series.” 2007 World Superpipe Champion, Simon Dumont, has been reported as saying that winter sports athletes have been waiting for a series like the AST Winter Dew Tour for some time and are really “fired up” about the inaugural event.

By the time the 2008/2009 skiing season comes around, snow skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts will be itching to hit the slopes again. The AST Winter Dew Tour promises to add some extra action to the mix, giving snow sport enthusiasts even more to look forward to.

Crested Butte Mountain Resort is the perfect venue for the U.S. Extreme Freeskiing Championships which draws some of the top big mountain freeskiing enthusiasts from across the world for the adrenaline-charged action offered by the resort’s wildest terrain. Snow skiing routes have interesting, and sometimes descriptive, names such as “Snaggletooth Glades”, “The Hourglass”, “Catch and Release” and “Bed, Bath and Beyond” possibly giving some idea of what skiers are up against.

The adventure begins with arrival and booking in on Tuesday 19 February, followed by the Junior Big Mountain Qualifying Day on Wednesday 20 February. Thursday’s program includes the Adult Big Mountain Qualifier and Day One of the Junior competition. Friday 22 February is filled with excitement as Day One of the Adult Big Mountain Competition gets under way and the Junior finals take place. The last day of the competition on Saturday 23 February features the Adult Big Mountain Competition Finals, followed by the much anticipated Awards Party.

The U.S. Extreme Freeskiing Championships is open to skiers over the age of 18 years, with a junior competition planned for ages 14-17 years. The competition organizers are only accepting on-line registrations and have made the Liability Waiver and Model Release forms available on-line so that competitors can complete them prior to the event. Unaccompanied minors will not be allowed to compete without the necessary paperwork.</p

Spectators add to the excitement of a competitive event and are always welcome. Venues for the U.S. Extreme Freeskiing Championships are accessible to intermediate (blue-level) skiers as well as snowboarders, although a short hike may be required. To take advantage of the best snow conditions, competition locations are announced the day before the event. The location and directions to the venues will be prominently displayed at the lifts.

It is generally agreed that the U.S. Extreme Freeskiing Championships remains one of the best freeskiing competitions around and is an event where reputations and legends are made. As the time for the U.S. Extreme Freeskiing Championships at Crested Butte Mountain Resort draws near, so the level of anticipation increases – among competitors and spectators alike.
