Killington Gets Set For Its 50th Birthday Bash

Vermont’s Killington Resort will be celebrating half a century of service to the snow skiing community with a host of fun-filled family-oriented activities on December 12-14. To make the weekend even more enjoyable, Killington is offering 50th birthday medallions at a cost of $50 each which will give medallion holders unlimited skiing and riding on December 13-14. These commemorative medallions will make holders eligible for a variety of discounts on products and services offered by Killington Chamber of Commerce members, as well as preferential lift access and other benefits at the resort.

The weekend excitement kicks off on Friday night with a Ski Sweater SoirÃ©e. Guests are invited to attend the party dressed in their White Stag, CB Sports, Obermeyer, Icelandic or Roffe ski sweaters as they honor the founders, pioneers and others who have been instrumental in developing Killington Resort into one of the premier winter sport destinations in the east. Guests will have the opportunity of taking a walk down memory lane by means of the displays of photos and an assortment of memorabilia, while enjoying an evening of dinner and dancing to the sounds of Joey Leone and his Chop Shop Band.

Saturday features a Poker Run and awe-inspiring mountain tours, while the highlight of the evening’s activities will be the 50th Birthday Party, starting with a torchlight parade at the Snowshed Lodge and down Snowshed Slope. The Long Trail pub will be providing family entertainment between 6 and 8 pm, with magic shows, face painting, sing-a-longs and plenty of cake and ice cream. From 8 pm Diamond Neil will entertain the crowds at the Killington Resort Center. Of course, in between all the entertaining activities, guests will be enjoying the superb skiing conditions that Killington is renowned for.

Killington Resort first opened for business on December 13, 1958, offering skiers seven trails and two surface lifts. The resort has expanded dramatically over the past five decades, and today snow sport enthusiasts can make use of 30 lifts, of which three are express gondolas and seven are express chairs, to access 191 trails stretching across seven mountain areas. Killington Peak, at 4241 feet, boasts access to the highest lift-served terrain in Vermont. State-of-the-art snow making and grooming equipment ensure that the terrain remains in tip-top condition every day.

Killington Celebrates 50 Years with Upgrades

Located in central Vermont, Killington Resort stretches across seven mountain areas, including renowned Pico Mountain. Killington is the largest resort in the northeast and offers snow sport enthusiasts access to 200 trails over diverse terrain, as well as the highest lift-served snow skiing and snowboarding in Vermont – Killington Peak at 4,241 feet. To celebrate 50 years of service to the snow skiing community and to ensure that it maintains its hard-earned reputation for excellence, Killington Resort is planning to spend $8.4 million in on-mountain improvements ahead of the 2008-2009 ski season.

Top of the list of improvements is the replacement of the existing fixed-grip Skye Peak Quad at the Bear Mountain base area, with a new high-speed detachable quad that will cut the current ride time of 13 minutes to under 5 minutes. The new lift will also provide easier access to intermediate cruising terrain on Skye Peak as well as Bear Mountain’s prime terrain parks and some of the East’s best free skiing and riding trails and glades. It is anticipated that the new lift will improve the flow of skiers and riders and eliminate any queuing at the lift area. In addition to making sure that skiers get onto the slopes without delay, Killington Resort is planning on-mountain trail improvements with the focus on unhindered top-to-bottom skiing and riding.

Killington Resort currently has close on 100 miles of snowmaking pipe and 1,850 snow guns, resulting in excellent snow skiing conditions from mid-November right through to early May. The upcoming improvements will increase snow production capacity while improving energy efficiency.

To assist frequent skiers and riders to take advantage of the planned improvements, Killington Resort is offering specials on season pass products as well as the re-introduction of their summer payment plan for the 2008-2009 season. A Killington Resort/Pico Mountain season pass allows access to over 1,200 acres of exciting snow skiing and snowboarding, terrain which is served by 32 lifts and groomed by a fleet of hi-tech snowcats. Over 70 percent of the terrain has the benefit of the extensive snowmaking system.

With all this and plenty of off-mountain activities, dining, shopping and lodging options, Killington Resort is sure to continue as the snow skiing destination of choice for many.
