Professional coaches at ski camps will assist you in improving your skiing skills. Ski camps may have set programs in which they teach a specific form of skiing (e.g. alpine ski racing camps or freestyle skiing camps). Other camps provide an open environment with instructors continually available to assist you to learn new tricks. Highly qualified instructors are able to teach beginner skiers all the way to experts. Many ski camps feature video analysis classes.

A full camp is where you stay with the ski camp coaches and organizers at a hotel or other ski resort accommodation. A local camp is when you arrange accommodation for yourself. Supervision at camps is taken seriously, and parents have no need to worry about their children attending well established and organized camps as all their needs are taken care of. Ski camps provide children with a chance to get back to being kids and can focus on having a good time. The clean air and enjoyable social atmosphere can only do them good.

In the past, the Winter Park Resort had made use of shuttle services to transport visitors and guests from the parking lots to the village and to the hotel, but with the creation of new parking lots to accommodate day visitors, a village cabriolet is being constructed to work more efficiently, and should be completed by late October. Shuttle services will still be available, however, the new village cabriolet will offer visitors free transportation into the village base.

The village cabriolet is also referred to as an ‘open air gondola’ and has an estimated one thousand four hundred feet slope length. There will be thirty nine cabins, which will each transport eight passengers at a time and will also be able to accommodate the transportation of mountain bicycles, skis, snowboarding equipment, wheelchairs and any other gear or luggage. It is predicted that the new village cabriolet will be able to transport almost two thousand eight hundred visitors per hour and will make access to the village more convenient for guests.

With so much effort having been put into upgrading and creating new terrains, skiing parks, mountain biking facilities and new chair lifts installations, the village cabriolet is a welcome addition to the Winter Park Resort. The resort has also purchased more wind energy credits to run the new lifts and village cabriolet. Visitors will also be able to be educated on wind energy and the steps taken by the resort to operate in harmony with their environment at the Connexion Platform. The new village and its magnificent attractions, skiing routes and breathtaking facilities is set to only increase the popularity of this resort and lure more visitors to its scenic and picturesque slopes each year.

There is no doubt that hangboarding is unlike anything else to hit the snow skiing slopes. Hangboarders are suspended horizontally above a snowboard by a harness, with handles to grip and rudders behind the board which are foot-controlled for direction and braking. Hangboarding has similarities to snow skiing or snowboarding in that the hangboard rider needs to know the mountain and the lines, as well as how to use the shifting of bodyweight to his advantage.

One of the first questions that most people may ask is: “Is it safe?” The hangboard rider has brakes that are easy to use and are instantly available. Also, being close to the snow, the rider has less distance to fall if this should happen. The hangboarding rig offers a measure of protection and the wearing of a helmet is obligatory. So, while any snow sport comes with an element of risk, the designers have continually given safety top priority during the design and testing of the hangboard and have had no serious injuries during two full seasons of hangboarding, therefore concluding that it is no riskier than snowboarding or snow skiing.

Most people who have tried their hand at hangboarding pick up the techniques fairly quickly. Hangboarding does require a fair measure of upper body strength, but if you are lacking in this, it is something which will be developed as you go along. There are a number of ways to start your hangboarding ride and each hangboarder develops his or her own style. Options are to push off using your hands, push off with one or both feet and swing into the rudders, or drop-in from a crouching position. Stopping the hangboard can be done by applying both rudders simultaneously which will slow you down to a stop. Alternatively stop in the same way as you would on a snowboard or skis, by sliding up on one edge and cutting against the slope.

Many snow skiing enthusiasts have a need for speed, so the question of “How fast can this thing go?” seems to be logical. Hangboarders can build speed and carry it as fast as most skiers. The aerodynamics of being low and close to the snow counts in the hangboarder’s favor. In testing the hangboard, the team found that this unusual riding position distorts the rider’s perception of speed and, although you may not actually be going faster than skiers, you will certainly feel as though you are.

As with many new snow sport innovations, hangboarding has met with some resistance at snow skiing slopes. In an effort to overcome objections, the designers of the hangboard are focusing attention on ensuring that the hangboard complies with all mountain safety regulations, as well as working closely with industry partners and mountain administrations to gain access to slopes all over the world. Hangboarding is already gaining a following and time will tell as to how popular this unusual sport will become.

The competition was held on the weekend of the 4th and 5th of August 2007 at Dusty’s Bar & BBQ. A fantastic schedule of events was organized for the Canadian National BBQ Championships, starting on Friday with the Judge School and BBQ Whole Hog Demonstration. Saturday was a great opportunity for anyone who wants to compete in the Local’s BBQ Day. Saturday events featured the 6th Annual Backyard Burger Championship, ‘King of the Grill’ Anything Goes Grilling Contest, the CASI Sanctioned Chilli Competition (a qualifier event for the World International Chilli Contest), and the Cocktail Contest. Additionally, Saturday will feature the preparations for the Canadian BBQ Championships. An awards ceremony was held in the late afternoon for winners of the various competitions held on Saturday.

Sunday is the day everyone was waiting for with the official Canadian BBQ Championships. This was the day when the professionals present their fare with the goal of being named the Canadian BBQ Champion. The order for presenting their BBQ delights is as follows: Pork Butt, Beef Brisket, Chicken and Ribs. A thrilling awards ceremony followed later in the afternoon.

Music and entertainment was enjoyed by visitors throughout the day. Big John and the Voodoo Dollz will playing at Dusty’s on Saturday night. Indeed, the Canadian National BBQ Championships at Whistler Blackcomb ski resort was a brilliant event, filled with good times, good smells and good food.

Of course, if you want to spend more time at Whistler Blackcomb, the resort has a wide offering of summer activities including: mountain biking, hiking, mini-golf, the Westcoaster luge, wall climbing, bungee trampolines, a human gyro, sightseeing and glacier skiing. So take some time out at Whistler Blackcomb this August.

Glacier slopes are usually not very steep and the number of runs a person can make is somewhat limited. Most skiers take part in glacier skiing when they are interested in doing to just a few sessions or if they are looking to improve their skiing technique. Glacier skiing can refer to both downhill skiing and cross country skiing.

Before you can set out on the glaciers, the first thing you need to do is check the weather conditions. Like any high altitude sporting event, weather conditions can help make your trip perfect, or make it an absolute disaster, even fatal. You can never be a hundred percent sure about what the weather will be like as it changes often, but you can get a basic idea of what to expect. Remember to always bring a lot of warm clothing with just incase. Often the temperature will drop as much as 0.5 to 0.7 degrees every 100 meters that you climb.

Clothing is something else you also need to think about. Since glacier skiing is normally done at lower altitudes it is not necessary to put on as thick clothing as you normally would. You can get away with lighter clothing, but always make sure you have packed some warm clothing and some waterproof outer gear. Other items you will be sure to need are sunglasses, wax for your skis if the snow is wet and suntan lotion for the harsh reflections that come off the snow.

The best time to get onto the slopes is early in the morning when the ground is still hard. Usually by lunchtime the ground is a little softer and slushy from the heat of the sun. Normally, if the ground gets too soft the slopes are closed for the rest of the day, which is another reason why you should get out as soon as possible. Of course, if you choose a higher slope, which is not facing the sun, you can take to the slopes any time of the day.

Glacier skiing is also a great way to extend your skiing season and can be enjoyed even when the normal slopes aren’t suitable for skiing. If the heat of the sun does melt the snow you always have the option of enjoying other sports like hiking, mountain biking and white water rafting until the next snowfall occurs.

Fernie Alpine boasts over 30 mountain biking trails. These range in difficulty levels. Double black means the trail is “extreme”; black means “most difficult”; blue is “more difficult”; and green is “easy”. Only experts should attempt the triple black trails at Fernie. Triple black mountain biking trails at Fernie Alpine include Kodiak Karnage with access at Mr. Berms and Aggravated Assault with many trying technical sections. If you are not very experienced or are looking for a relaxing ride, try out the green trails, such as Silk & Manchuria, Larch Trail, Honey Bee and Eville. The majority of the trails are classified blue. Each of these mountain biking trails at Fernie Alpine offers you a unique experience with different features and stunning scenery.

Mountain biking is big at Fernie Alpine, so there is even more on offer than just biking trails. Private lessons are offered to individuals of all ages and riding levels. Professionals will teach you new techniques and help you to hone your skills. You can book either a half day (3 hours) or full day (6 hours) session. Fernie is home to the marvelous Dirty Girls Mountain Bike Camps. These camps are specifically aimed at women and were carefully created by women. Exceptional female instructors assist beginner and intermediate riders to grown in confidence and develop their skills, all in a relaxed, fun-filled atmosphere. The first camp has already been run with the second to follow in August. During the camp, individuals will enjoy a bike maintenance seminar, skill sessions and instructional trail rides. There are also various clinics held which include topics such as braking, cornering, manual jumps and so forth. Rentals are available for those who do not have their own mountain bikes.

Another exciting mountain biking experience on offer at Fernie Alpine is the Thursday Night Mountain Bike Series. Entry is $5 per race and participants must register before 6:30 at the Mountain Adventure Center. Great prizes are on offer for racers in the various categories. After the race, participants can enjoy a drink at Kelsey’s.

The thrilling Fernie Full Throttle Mountain Bike Festival will be taking place on from the 24th to the 26th of August. This is set to be an amazing mountain biking event at Fernie Alpine that will include outdoor movies, contests, a beer garden, pancake breakfast, live music, a family play area and more. If you are an avid mountain biker, head off to Fernie Alpine this summer for fun that never ends!

During the last 10 years, this trend has blossomed. According to the IMBA (International Mountain Biking Association), over 170 North American ski resorts now provide mountain-biking options. This number should continue to grow – ski resorts are seeing the opportunity for summer revenue, and many bicyclists now visit these new mountain trails.

Ski resorts are a natural choice for summer biking. They already have road access, gear shops and restaurants. They have beautiful scenery. Their dirt maintenance roads can become easy trails for beginners. Their open ski runs, once free of snow, are perfect terrain for constructing single-track biking trails.

Many ski resorts have gone a step further – for a fee, they whisk bikers and their bikes to the upper slopes, using ski lifts or gondolas. For many bikers, this is far preferable to slowly pedaling uphill on their own. It’s particularly appreciated by beginners, users of heavier full-suspension mountain bikes, and bikers that want to maximize their time spent riding downhill.

These new resorts may also offer bike rentals, lessons, guided tours, color-coded trail maps, easy loops around the flat base areas, and obstacle-strewn “terrain parks”. Some areas, such as Whistler-Blackcomb, British Columbia, also put on biking competitions and festivals.
