Galdhopiggen Offers Top Skiing in Norway
Situated within the municipality of Lom in the Jotunheimen mountain area of Norway, the majestic Galdhopiggen is the highest mountain in Scandinavia reaching a height of 2,469 meters (8,100 feet). Although Galdhoppigen towers above the surrounding landscape, it is accessible on foot and the view from the top is awe-inspiring, making it a popular choice with “peakbaggers†– summit-focused hikers. Galdhoppigen also offers superb snow skiing and snowboarding terrain and as the area is perpetually covered in snow, it is a popular skiing destination in Northern Europe’s summer months from May/June through to mid November.
The Renowned American Birkebeiner
The American Birkebeiner (otherwise known as Birkie) is considered to be North America’s largest cross country ski race. At 51 kilometers, it is also one of the longest races, with participants skiing from Cable to Hayward in Wisconsin. As in previous years, approximately 8,000 skiers from at least 19 countries are expected to participating in the Birkie, as well as related snow skiing races on the program of the 35th annual American Birkebeiner to take place from 21 to 23 February 2008.
Terje Håkonsen Sets New World Record
A new world record was set at The Oakley Arctic Challenge in Oslo recently. World-renowned snowboarding champion Terje HÃ¥konsen surpassed the previous record for highest air on a quarter pipe. Heikke Sorsa set the world record of 9.3 meters back in 2001, but Terje HÃ¥konsen went on to perform a backside 360 at 9.8 meters. A remarkable feat indeed. After such a fantastic maneuver, there is no doubt as to why HÃ¥konsen is called the greatest snowboarder ever.
