The Pennsylvania Ski and Winter Sports Museum and Hall of Fame is located in Camelback Ski Area’s base lodge, with additional exhibits in the museum’s Liberty Mountain Annex. In 1994 Alex Bensinger and Alber Dowden headed a group in forming this education organization that is committed to preserving the state’s skiing and winter sport heritage.

The museum’s collection at Camelback in Tannersville includes displays entitled “One Hundred Years of Ski Equipment”, “History of Sledding”, “One Hundred Years of Pocono Winter Sports” and the Hall of Fame. Amongst the items on display are skis, equipment, clothing, sleds, ice skates, posters, biographies, memorabilia and photographs. Organizations that have collaborated with the museum to create a place where the public can learn about winter sports include the United States Ski and Snowboard Association, American Association of Museums and the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission.

The Hall of Fame, also located at Camelback Ski Area, has been in operation since 2002 and has inducted about 50 individuals who have made contributions to snow sports in Pennsylvania, countrywide or internationally. These individuals are honored at the annual Hall of Fame ceremonies and then their names are added to the permanent exhibit. Amongst the Hall of Famers are Howard head, inventor of the metal ski and S.L. Adams, creator of the Flexible Flyer. Founders of various ski resorts have also been inducted, including James Moore (Camelback), Martin Wilburger (Elk Mountain), Dupre Family (Seven Springs) and Irvin Naylor (Roundtop).Others who have been inducted into the Hall of Fame include veterans of the 10th Mountain Division from World War II, National Ski Patrol volunteers, ski retailers, racing officials and ski instructors.

The Pennsylvania Ski and Winter Sports Museum’s Liberty Mountain Annex is situated at Liberty Mountain Resort and Conference Center in Fairfield. This supplement to the main exhibits at Camelback was opened in December of 2007. This museum contains a number of items related to the history of winter sports, particularly those related to Liberty Mountain. There are also plans to expand to other ski areas, opening up small museums across Pennsylvania. Be sure to pay a visit to the Pennsylvania Ski and Winter Sports Museum and Hall of Fame when skiing in the area, as there is much to discover.

Winter sport enthusiasts heading for the slopes in Pennsylvania, U.S.A., this season have a number of exciting upgrades and developments to look forward to. From expanded terrain and improved equipment to upgraded facilities and passholder exchange programs, there is so much on offer in Pennsylvania for the 2011-12 season.

The popular Seven Springs Mountain Resort has increased its terrain parks from six to seven, with the new Streets Urban Park to be situated in Foggy Bowl. The resort has always been dedicated to developing its terrain parks and has even increased the walls of its Superpipe up to 22 feet. The larger Superpipe will be host to the Gatorade Free Flow amateur event in February 2012. The new Easy Rider beginner area will be opened as a transition zone between the Beginner Bowl and the novice runs, and features a Magic Carpet lift. Certain chairlifts have been upgraded and the rental shop boasts a large number of new skis, bindings and boots. In addition, Seven Springs Mountain Resort will continue to offer night skiing, snow tubing, snow shoeing, sleigh rides and more.

Skiers heading to Hidden Valley Resort will be able to enjoy an additional 3.5 acres of terrain, called Voyageur Glades, ideal for glade skiing. This fantastic new area is situated on the North Summit. A terrain park has been created where the half-pipe used to be situated. Reached by means of a handle tow, the terrain park boasts both man-made and natural features. The base lodge has also received some attention, including a fresh coat of paint, new carpets and improved Wi-Fi, amongst other upgrades. Those who are skiing or snowboarding for the first time this season can join in beginner lessons, as well as the Learn-to-Ski/Snowboard package. A special discount card is offered to those who complete the package or lessons, offering great savings for your next visit to Hidden Valley. Be sure to find out about the special passholder exchange program between Hidden Valley and Blue Knob, as well as Hidden Valley, Seven Springs, Snowshoe and Wisp.

White Mountain Resort has worked to improve its slope-lighting, as well as its snowmaking. The rental options now include additional Burton snowboards, Dalbello boots and Elan skis. Snow sport fans can purchase a Three Area Season Pass to access all of Snow Time Inc.’s resorts – Whitetail, Ski Liberty and Roundtop Mountain. Ski Sawmill has also made some changes, including the installation of a triple chair and a double chair.

Situated in south-central Pennsylvania, about a 90 minute drive from Baltimore and D.C., Whitetail Resort offers superb snow skiing and snowboarding facilities. Although Whitetail is one of America‘s youngest ski resorts, it offers even the most experienced skiers a challenge, while ensuring that beginners and intermediate skiers are well taken care of. In line with the resort’s commitment to give skiers what they want, Whitetail will be undertaking a number of upgrade projects during the 2008 summer season in preparation for the 2008/2009 snow skiing season.

Under the ownership of Snow Time Inc. since the fall of 1999, Whitetail Resort has already seen some major improvements, including extensions to the base lodge, a new snow tubing park and lighting for a number of expert slopes, as well as additional snow making equipment to allow the slopes to open earlier in the snow skiing season. Upcoming projects are aimed at making a snow skiing holiday at Whitetail Resort an even more memorable experience.

Work has already begun on cutting a new trail as part of the upgrade project at Whitetail Resort. The new trail, which will be the longest on the mountain, begins at the top of Snow Park, winding its way through the valley and ending at the bottom of Fanciful. This beginner’s trail, which has not yet been named, will be more than 2,800 feet long with an average width of about 80 feet. Once the trail has been cut and sculpted, 26 brand new Areco snowmaking fan guns will be installed along the trail, which will also be lit for night snow skiing and snowboarding.

A new double chairlift to service the Jib Junction Terrain Park will be installed before the start of the 2008/2009 snow skiing season. This 1,000 foot long lift will relieve the congestion that has been experienced at the Upper Angel Drop – which means that skiers will have more time to spend on the slopes.

Even while preparations are being made for the next snow skiing season, summer season activities are in full swing at Whitetail Resort. Visitors are enjoying the world-class golf course as well as honing their fly-fishing skills in the beautiful rivers in the area – wonderful ways to pass the time before the next exciting Whitetail Resort snow skiing season begins.

The Hidden Valley Four Seasons Resort in Somerset, Pennsylvania, U.S.A. is to undergo renovations, improvements and expansion to the value of an estimated $1 billion over a thirty-year period. The developer, The Buncher Company, sees a great future for this popular snow skiing resort and part of its short terms plans are to upgrade the Hidden Valley ski slopes and ski lodge in time for the upcoming snow skiing season beginning on 15 December 2007.

Hidden Valley features 28 slopes and trails for snow skiing and snowboarding and improvements to the skiing facilities will include new snow-making equipment, new chairs for the ski lifts, slope groomers and new state-of-the-art ski rental equipment.

New slopes are being developed which will be used exclusively for the increasingly popular sport of snow tubing. This exciting activity, which is similar to sledding and involves speeding down the slope on a specialized inner tube, requires no particular skill, relying on gravity to propel the rider to the bottom of the slope. There is, however, very little the rider can do to steer the snow tube and for this reason, it is advisable to stick to the designated slopes for snow tubing.

In addition to top-class snow sport facilities, Hidden Valley boasts an 18-hole golf course, a sports club, eight tennis courts, basketball and volleyball courts, three swimming pools, thirty miles of hiking and biking trails as well as a lake fully stocked with bass and trout.

The developments in Hidden Valley will include 1,800 new housing units, including single-family homes, townhouses and condominiums. At least 600 housing units will be part of a new gated community to be called Paradise Springs.

The Buncher Company, which has been in real estate development for ninety years, purchased Hidden Valley for approximately $12.4 million from a family-owned company that had been operating the 1,500-acre resort since 1983. The Buncher Company hopes to integrate the expansion of Hidden Valley with a project they are working on in the adjoining 800-acre site.

The developers see Hidden Valley Four Seasons Resort as a family-oriented holiday destination and snow skiing fans can look forward to the ongoing improvements to achieve this objective.
