The Kings Cup Ski and Snowboarding Championships will be taking place between 9 to 10 July 2010, with a practice day being open before the main attraction, on 8 July 2010. The most talented skiing athletes and snowboarders from South Africa will be attending this event, and displaying their technical skills and talented maneuvers on the white slopes of the Maluti Mountains. Some of the disciplines to look forward to include big air, dual slalom, alpine giant slalom, snowboarding slope style and rails.

FIS Junior Championships 2010

More than two hundred junior athletes have confirmed their presence at the 2010 FIS Junior Championships, which will be hosted by New Zealand this year. With over sixteen countries participating, the championship is gearing up to be an event not to be missed. For the first time, freeskiing and snowboarding will be combined in the championship, with disciplines including ski cross, giant slalom, freeski halfpipe and snowboard big air. This wonderful championship for athletes under the age of twenty, will take place between the 20th to the 31st of August 2010.

Queenstown Winter Festival 2010

For ten days, Queenstown will be hosting their annual Queenstown Winter Festival, which takes place from 25 June to 4 July 2010. Visitors to the festival will be able to enjoy comedy galas, jazz festivals, ice hockey tournaments, skiing competitions, discos and various other winter sports activities. Each year, approximately sixty thousand people attend this festival, and this year is organisers are anticipating the same support as in previous years.

Poncho Blues Festival 2010

World Snowboarding Championship

Even though snowboarding has grown into an immensely popular winter sport, it has always remained on the sidelines in regard to championship tournaments. But that is all about to change with the recent announcement that a World Snowboarding Championship is currently being established. At the 2009 TTR General Assembly, which was held in Austria, representatives from around the world supported the project, which is being organized by the World Snowboard Federation and the TTR World Tour.

Swatch TTR, or Ticket To Ride, was established by Terje Haakonsen in the year 2002, and is a non-profit organization that focuses on the development of competitive snowboarding. Now, with the creation of the World Snowboarding Championship, the TTR will undertake their biggest challenge to date. It has been decided that the World Snowboarding Championship will be held every four years, and the inauguration event will be taking place in 2012. Oslo, in Norway, has been selected as the host of the event and the venue will still be advised, as the Norwegian Snowboard Federation is still awaiting approval by the Norwegian Ministry of the Environment in regard to plans to upgrade the Tryvann Vinterpark. The Oslo Municipality has also confirmed their support of the World Snowboarding Championship by putting up over $4.3 million towards the event. Reto Lamm, TTR World Tour President, commented that the creation of this event was a giant leap forward for the sport of snowboarding and expressed his enthusiasm for the inaugural event by saying: “We look forward to putting on a world-class event to push the progression of the sport and provide a global platform to showcase the best riders in the world.” The World Snowboarding Championship will have various divisions, enabling both men and women to display their best abilities in slopestyle disciplines as well as in the halfpipe events.

Some of the details in regard to prize money, participant qualifications and various event schedules are still to be decided and will be made public as soon as a final decision has been reached. The World Snowboarding Championship will allow snowboarding enthusiasts from all over the globe to compete for top honors and world ranking.

Katal Landing Pad at Mammoth

Due to superior snowfall during the winter season, Mammoth Mountain will remain open for winter enthusiasts until 4 July 2010. On 22 May 2010, a new Spring Terrain Park will be unveiled, together with the installation of the Katal Landing Pad, which will be open to the public at various times during the day. The Katal Landing Pad, is five feet thick, has a width of 50 feet and is 90 feet in length. It allows skiers and snowboarders to practice tricks and takeoffs without the fear of injury, as so often happens when they practice on the snow.

Snow Golf 2010

Skiing in Estonia

The Republic of Estonia is surrounded by the Russian Federation, the Baltic Sea, the Gulf of Finland and Latvia. It offers visitors a temperate climate, depending on the season, but the Baltic States begin to receive their first snowflakes during the month of November. The seasonal snowfall allows skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts to enjoy a variety of winter sports on the different slopes of Estonia. Each year the Baltic region is increasing in popularity, with Estonia being a favorite skiing destination.

Even though Estonia begins to receive its snowfall during November, the skiing season only begins in the month of December and lasts until March. Its favorable geographic location has given Estonia numerous slopes for skiers to enjoy, ranging in various difficulty levels and activities.

Last Park Standing 2010
