Over a hundred kilometers of superb quality snow await you at Arefjallen, Northern Europe’s largest ski resort! Located on the edge of a large frozen lake, Arefjallen in Sweden hosts the world’s biggest downhill skiing race every April, the Skutsjutet. This time-honored ski resort also is home to the Freeride and Red Bull Big Air competitions. Moreover, Arefjallen is used by ski enthusiasts as a training ground because of its excellent range of slopes.

A group of five charming villages with characteristic old buildings and a very Swedish atmosphere, accompanied by eye-catching scenery, make up the beautiful resort of Arefjallen. Hordes of skiers and jetsetters descend here for its outstanding skiing and scintillating après-ski. It has earned its name as a family ski resort as well because of its excellent schools and facilities for children and adults of all levels of skiing ability.

The 99 trails are accessed by an efficient system of forty-three lifts. The longest run here is an impressive 6.5 km; most of the runs at Arefjallen are either intermediate or advanced, while the rest are evenly distributed between beginners and expert. Night skiing is popular at Arefjallen and greater challenges await cross country skiers on the 56 km of trails.

Snowboarders are well provided for at the snowboard park with five quarter-pipes and a half-pipe. The resort also features a snow-sure course fun park. You can participate in a host of non-skiing activities at Arefjallen such as snowmobile touring, horseback riding, ice-fishing, dog-sledding, paragliding, hang-gliding, ice-climbing and windsurfing on snow.

Accommodation is available at Arefjallen and the nearby village of Bjoren. The facilities available at the latter are perfect for families. The accommodation available at Arefjallen ranges from modern hotels to traditional Alpine style wooden structures. The ski resort is famed for its vibrant nightlife at the various bars, clubs, cafes and discos. There are also more sedate and relaxed restaurants both on and off the slopes. An excellent ski vacation resort for visitors of all ages and levels, Arefjallen merits repeated visits.

Snowboarding holidays are the best but often it is only possible to go snowboarding on vacation. The rigorous physical demands of the sport ensure that you’re stiff for at least the first few days and that means that you cannot really enjoy the precious little time you spend on the slopes fully. But how do you prepare for it without actually hitting the slopes? You start ‘homeboarding‘, of course!.

Most likely you’ve found in the past that no matter how hard you try to prepare your body for the rigors of the sport before you actually head out on your expensive snowboarding holiday, you never seem to get it quite right. Wall squats, gym equipment – nothing seems to quite imitate the movement required by the sport. Most vacationing snowboarders are hit with Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS) in their legs within the first day of their vacation. The medically recognized condition occurs due to a sudden increase in the duration of an exercise or the introduction of a new type of exercise. The only way to get rid of it is to undertake a sport-specific program of training to target the correct muscles in the correct way and slowly build up their strength and durability. Previously this has been virtually impossible for snowboarders who live in cities and who are only able to hit the slopes maybe once a year. Now it seems they can start preparing for their trip in the comfort of their own homes.

The Human Touch Board is essentially a small, motorized snowboard which will help you to recreate the conditions your body will experience out on the slopes so that you can start to train your body long before you board the plane to your snowboarding holiday destination. The board is designed to recreate the rolling, yawing and pitching motion that a snowboarder may experience during the average descent. It also ensures that the various stresses that the slopes place on a snowboarder’s body are simulated. All this means that you can hop on and go ‘homeboarding’ in the comfort of your own home!

As the board does its thing, the snowboarder will find all the correct muscles stimulated so that he can gradually build up the stamina required to get the most out of his well-earned and often very expensive holiday. In order to successfully ride the board, the ‘homeboarder’ must squat in the same position as he would for a trip down the ski slopes. He will be encouraged to use his core muscle groups by counter-balancing with his torso, while his inner thighs, outer thighs and gluts get the work-out of a lifetime. Homeboarding can also be incorporated into a fun and challenging workout routine, as boarders can perform squats, trunk twists, hula-hoops and single leg balances to further improve their balance and add diversity to their training sessions. The boards can be easily purchased and definitely make the perfect alternative to trying to train at the gym and targeting all the wrong muscle groups.

Through the dedication of The Hartford and Disabled Sports USA, disabled athletes are given the opportunity to explore new activities and take part in a skiing adventure.

Disabled Sports USA has been active in establishing multiple sports for a range of disabilities and was founded by a group of war veterans in 1967, who were disabled in Vietnam. The organization gives its athletes hope, a new outlook on life, and a goal. Many of the projects would not be possible without the generosity of various organizations, such as The Hartford, which is a Fortune 100 financial company that reaches out to support the disabled community by hosting events like The Hartford Ski Spectacular.

From training programs to racing events and banquets, The Hartford Ski Spectacular has it all. Beginners and those taking to the snow for the first time will be able to utilize provided adaptive skiing equipment during their training session, while other entrants are requested to bring their own gear. Participants of all disabilities and of all ages are encouraged to join in the fun and excitement, as professional volunteers will be on duty every day to ensure safety and assist participants at all times. It is one of the biggest skiing events for disabled athletes and each year, the program receives approximately eight hundred participants.

Ample accommodation, parking and shuttle services are just a few features that the Beaver Run Resort has focused on to make the time at the resort as comfortable and as enjoyable for all. With youth programs, Nordic skiing, races and training camps to look forward to, the only thing left for athletes to do is to ensure they have entered and then to make their way to the Beaver Run Resort and be a part of the week long skiing action.

Not many skiers have the financial ability to jet off around the world so as to train all year round. It is a challenge for ordinary people, who do not have the luxury of sponsorship or riches, to remain fit during the off season and therefore many skiers are turning to the use roller skis. Roller skis enable skiers to remain fit and in training anywhere in the world. As with many pieces of equipment, there are just as many skiing enthusiasts who praise roller skis, as there are skiers who do not believe in these alternative training methods.

Roller skis have been used in the skiing community since the early 1900s as a method of training. During those years, roller skis were crudely homemade models, but their use and positive results were recognized even back then. Today, roller ski models are light weight and can be used on dirt or asphalt surfaces. And as the popularity of roller skiing begins to increase in rapid numbers, the design of the roller skis has advanced to suit various skiing athletes and their preferences.

Most roller skis are condensed versions of conventional skis and have a wheel at the front and at the back of the ski. Bindings on the skis allow roller skiers to train either in their ski boots or in athletic shoes, and the biggest manufacturers of rollers skis are Marwe, V2 and Pro-Ski. The classic model roller ski simulates the effect of grip wax by having a device on the front wheel of the roller ski, preventing the ski from being able to roll backwards. More modern versions allow for different wheel types and light weight designs. Poles have also been modified with carbide tips, as the baskets on snow poles will get damaged on any hard surface.

Even though roller skis are not able to simulate the exact feeling that will be experienced on the snow, it will still provide athletes with the necessary leg and upper body training needed to be strong on the slopes. Many athletes concentrate only on fitness during the off season, by swimming, jogging and going to the gym, but no other piece of equipment can keep these athletes in skiing condition as well as roller skis can. Practicing striding, technique and weight shifting is possible with roller skis, and not in a swimming pool. Roller skis are proving to be invaluable to athletes around the world and it seems that their popularity is growing as the competition toughens and athletes show greater determination to remain in shape all year round. For skiers who are unable to get to snow during the summer months, roller skis have become a part of their training routine, keeping them fit and ready throughout the year.
