Mayrhofen

Austria is renowned for its picturesque ski resorts and outstanding levels of service. You can enjoy world class skiing and a vibrant après ski on your next ski vacation here. There are hundreds of ski resorts to choose from, but one which pretty much lets you do your own thing is Mayrhofen.

Very popular with British skiers, Mayrhofen is located in the stunning, steep-sided Zillertal Valley. Its ski area is situated on two separate plateaux, the Penken and the Ahorn, and it is part of the Super Zillertal ski area which has a lot more to offer. Mayrhofen is a lively and friendly ski resort with skiing to suit all age groups and skills. Non-skiers will also find plenty to choose from with the many the indoor and outdoor sporting activities. Children can learn skiing on the nursery slopes and enjoy themselves at the swimming pool with aqua slides and whirlpool.

Skiing at Ahorn is ideal for beginners and Penken, with its fast gondola, offers intermediate runs. Super Zillertal has over 600 km of skiing trails at the ski resorts of Hippach, Finkenberg, Zell am Ziller, Gerlos, Koningsleiten and Tux and the Hintertux glacier. A free ski bus service connects the various resorts. Mayrhofen has grown into a large and spread out resort but has retained the atmosphere of a traditional Tyrolean village.

Snowboarders are in for an exciting time at the local board park, with some rails, a fun box and three consecutive kickers. The first kicker is pretty good, the second one is a table top and the third is huge and certainly not for the faint-hearted. The board park is groomed at end of day, so is prone to ice in the morning. It is generally safer to let it soften and use the snowboard after 11am.

Mayrhofen offers vibrant après-ski and the night life is varied but can easily be avoided if that is not your scene. There are a range of bars, cafés and restaurants around the resort’s main street and the bars, pubs, beer cellars, discos and casino become popular meeting places as the slopes empty. Mayrhofen has some lovely walks to offer and one can easily take a short trip to Innsbruck and Italy from here.
