Oberammergau offers plenty to do besides skiing
Oberammergau is a complete vacation resort which offers excellent skiing and a lot more. The town is famous for the Passion Play that has been staged every ten years since the 17th century. This historic town is also known for its beautiful painted houses. Oberammergau has sunny slopes that offer both easy slopes and tough ungroomed trails.
There are two main skiing areas, Laber which is a mountain behind the town and Kolben which is a long, picturesque chairlift journey away. The area is better suited for Nordic skiing with over 100 km of prepared trails, both flat and steep. The downhill skiing enables you to look down on Ettal. Cross country is free of cost and trails crisscross across the Ammer Valley whose altitude and width have made Oberammergau paradise for cross-country skiers. Kolben has easy slopes from where one can take drag lifts below and is perfect for beginners. The mountain huts offer refreshments and views of Kolbensattel and the tough lift free Zahn.
Laber is more difficult to locate and is an ungroomed, challenging black run when the snowfall is poor or a delight for powder lovers in heavy snowfall. A cabin lift takes you to Laber’s summit for a thrilling descent but not till you have enjoyed the views from the restaurant. The runs are mainly beginner and intermediate with a stretch which offers alternate (double black) steep pitch to St. Gregor-Wellenberg.
Off the ski slopes one can indulge in curling, hiking, ice skating paragliding, tobogganing and horse sleigh rides. The ski pass entitles you free use of the Wellenberg Leisure Centre where you can enjoy indoor swimming, indoor tennis and sauna. Après-Ski is aplenty at local bars, discos, cafes, coffee houses and entertainment includes folklore evenings and concerts. One can take time to visit the fascinating Linderhof castle near by.
The natural sledging tracks in Unterammergau on the way to the Pürschling and near Scherenau are best suited for experts but anyone can go ice skating at the skating rink at the Malensteinweg, free of charge. Take the opportunity to walk through snow covered forests and ice clear streams to complete this enchanting vacation.
