Murren

The Brits recognized a good thing when they saw it. We owe our thanks to them for setting up the charming ski resort of Murren in the 1920s. Nestled at the foot of the Schilthorn, Murren was one of the first ski resorts ever built and is set against the magnificence of the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau. It is located 150 km southwest of Zurich and offers access to the Wengen and Grindelwald slopes.

Murren is a traffic free ski vacation resort of picture perfect beauty. Its gentle slopes make Murren a popular family choice, though accomplished skiers and snowboarders love to get their fill of some of its sheer and more technical runs. These are used for the Inferno-Ski Races and Triathlon. The black runs down from the Schilthorn and great off-piste at Blumental are other major attractions for the expert skier.

As attractive as the skiing offered at Murren, is the scenery it provides. One can never tire of gazing at the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau peaks. People often come here only for the breathtaking views it offers of these magnificent Alpine peaks. The hotels and chalets, built on the sides of the cliff, offer breath-taking views all around. The excellent lift system provides access to the 32 pistes providing 53 km of skiing between them.

Murren has access to the Jungfrau Ski region which boasts of an impressive 200 km of pistes. A greater variety awaits you when you take a trip down the Lauterbrunnen Valley. An additional reason to make a trip to the valley is to visit the Piz Gloria revolving restaurant which offers stunning views of the 200 mountains and 40 glaciers that surround it.

Nightlife in Murren is not of riotous revelry but more in terms of intimate and romantic fondue evenings, glacier bars and dance clubs. Off the slope activities are quite limited, but there are a variety of small shops and Alpine sports museums to browse through. This car-free ski resort can only be accessed by train or gondola. Both journeys provide stunning views of the Alps and add to the fairyland ambience of Murren.
