Arguably one of the best destination ski areas in Montana, Moonlight Basin Ski Resort is a great first-class snow skiing destination. Still relatively new, the resort has all the best and newest facilities needed to ensure the comfortable, continued running of the resort. It can cater to roughly 9,000 people at any one time but it is seldom this cramped. Instead, Moonlight Basin offers a superb combination of comfortable numbers, great facilities, brilliant ski runs and welcoming staff.
Moonlight Basin is situated on the north face of Lone Peak. The mountain is located in Big Sky, Montana. It has a summit elevation of 11,150 ft and a 4,150 ft vertical drop. The longest run to be found here is a whopping 4,784 ft long and the mountain receives roughly 400 inches of annual snowfall. There are six well-positioned ski lifts to take you to the start of 80 great trails spread out over 1,900 acres. The trails are rated 23% beginner, 41% intermediate and 36% advanced so there is something for everyone to enjoy. And because there are so many, you’ll never get bored. What’s more, there are plans to extend current trails and lifts so that there will be even more on offer in the future. The resort also has snowshoe trails but there are no terrain parks or halfpipes for the freestylers.
The resort has great staff and good instructors and you will be able to enjoy the services of talented ski and snowboarding instructors for all ages and levels. There are children’s and women’s programs available and there is child care for those with really small children. Moreover, there is plenty of dining available at Madison Lodge, Pony Express and The Timbers while Moonlight lodge is a favourite for accommodation.
The resort is open year-round and you will find a variety of activities to enjoy, depending on the time of year that you visit. These include spa treatments, snowshoe tours, ice-skating, dog sledding, swimming, a health club, mountain biking, canoeing, rafting, fly fishing, guided hikes and rock climbing as well as a great golf course. Moonlight Basin also provides guided tours of the Yellowstone National Park.
