Sweden
A ski vacation in Sweden offers an opportunity to get in touch with nature in the best possible way. The resorts are not built in an area cleared for the purpose, but are in the midst of unspoiled wilderness surrounded by lakes and forests. A vacation in Sweden is perfect for those who want to do other things as well, because the ski area is fairly limited but the country’s attractions are plentiful. The main Ski areas are at Are and Vemdalen and both offer slopes for skiers of varying skills.
Are is located in the north of Sweden on a lake surrounded by low sweeping mountains covered by pine forests. There are four separate ski areas and villages at Are, linked to the same lift pass and skiing is particularly good for beginners. English speaking instructors provide excellent tuition on the gentle slopes of Duved and the runs at Bjornen. There are good runs for intermediate level skiers while experts have many challenges here on the steep slopes including the exciting World Cup run.
There is plenty to do at Are and there is a good choice of accommodation. Service at this resort is excellent. Are offers seventy kilometers of cross country terrain and a special, floodlit park for snowboarding. Other activities include ice climbing, skating, skidoo, dog sledding and reindeer safaris. Check out the sauna near the underground stream after a hard day of fun. There are several restaurants and bars that are very lively during the weekends. The Diplomat Hotel bar and Asia Bar are particularly recommended.
Vemdalen, Bjornrike and Klosjo are other ski resorts which share the same ski lift pass, making it good value for money. The wide gentle slopes are great for beginners and intermediates. The180 km of cross country trailscape of lakes and forested mountains. Night skiing is permitted on certain days of the week.
The area is a snowboarder’s paradise with dedicated parks and plenty of challenges. Kids get free helmets with snowboard rentals. Off-slope activities include ice fishing, snowmobile safaris and dog sledding. The standard of food, accommodation and service is very high everywhere in Sweden; most people speak excellent English.
