Silver Mountain
Silver Mountain was once a treasure trove of rich silver deposit, which drew many prospectors to this corner of north Idaho in an attempt to strike it rich. Today, long after the silver deposits have dried up, it has found a new place in the lives of many people. It has become a coveted skiing location; a real treasure in terms of terrain, comfort and natural beauty. Silver Mountain Resort is one of the jewels in Idaho’s crown.
The resort has a reputation for quite a few things. One is 300 inch thick, beautifully fine powder. Another is a summit elevation of 6300 ft – on both of the resort’s mountains. Two mountains allow for a greater variety of trails and there are 67 different trails to choose from. The trails span out over 1500 acres of skiable land which is diverse from one trail to the next. Skiers can make full use of the 2200 ft vertical drop or they can opt for a shorter, easier trail. Silver Mountain caters for alpine skiers, snowboarders, snowcat rides, night skiing and snowshoe trails and features a great terrain park complete with halfpipe.
Once you’ve decided which of the seven lifts you’ll need to get to the start of your trail, you hardly ever wait before you can hop on and be quickly whisked of you destination. For those who enjoy a good view, the scenic gondola ride is a must – even if you’re not planning to ski from the top. The slopes are graded 20% beginner, 40% intermediate, 30% advanced and 10% expert so there is something for everyone at Silver Mountain Resort.
Once you’ve worked up an appetite, you may take in a meal at the Mountain House Grill, Terrible Edith’s Bar & Grill, The Veranda Restaurant, Mountain Tapas Café & Bar or CJ’s Cafe and Coffee Company. You can rent just about anything you will need at the lodge rental shops, or you can take a visit to Gondola village to see what else is available. Accommodation takes the form of resort hotels, vacation homes and bed & breakfasts.
Skiing is best enjoyed between November and April but if you wish to spend time here during the summer, you wont be disappointed. Besides being breathtakingly beautiful, Silver Mountain regularly hosts events such as open-air concerts. You can also expect to enjoy hiking, mountain biking, scenic chairlifts, a mountain playground and a visit to the Fire Lookout Tower.
